JUNIOR SQUASH@BLACKHEATH

Great news......................

We are pleased to announce that the popular Junior Sessions @ Blackheath will continue on Saturdays with two sessions each Saturday from 9:00am - 10:30am & 10:30am - 12 noon. We will decide which session is best based on age and current ability.

The sessions will be a mix of exercise, coaching and games but the emphasis will be on having fun while getting some exercise and meeting others in a friendly and safe environment. The players will also learn the basic rules of squash including how to score a game. The first session will be free and we can provide eye protection and racquets for this first session. Going forward, and if they like the sessions and want to continue, we will ask for eye protection to be provided as these get damaged and the players don't tend to look after them if provided by us. We can help source these if required and they cost around £15 to £20 depending on the brand.

We will provide all other equipment going forward but feel free to tell them to bring along their own racquet if they have one. We also ask that they wear non-marking trainers so that the floors don't get marked, and comfortable sports clothing.. After the first session we will charge £5 for the sessions and will look to run these in blocks of eight weeks, with the cost paid up front as that makes it easier to manage the finances. The blocks will run similar to school terms times.

We will also require a consent form from you which we would ask you to complete and bring along to the first session.

Please also bring along a water bottle or similar container as we want to ensure safety so ask them to use their own bottle, especially with the current COVID issues. There is water available if needed on site where they can refill the bottles

Squash is a game that can be played all year round in all weathers. Played properly, it burns huge numbers of calories and uses every muscle in the body. As well as physical fitness, it builds mental toughness – setting goals, quickly making high risk decisions, learning to win and how to cope with losing (when there’s no-one else in the team to blame). All this builds young people who look after themselves and develop pleasant, capable characters.

It is crucially important to allow young players to develop at their own pace and above all to make playing sport FUN ! Too great an emphasis on winning too early merely reinforces any pre-existing feelings of failure and serves to discourage youngsters from sport.

It is a sad reality that 70% of youngsters have given up active sport by the age of 13.
